Founder's Message
Queens Historical Society's signature stage performance QUEENS OF THE NILE, NOW made it's west coast premier in 1989 through the sponsorship of the Black Women’s Forum, founded by Maxine Waters, Ethel Bradley and Ruth Washington.  Today, QUEENS appears exclusively at the Festival of African Royalty established in 1999 at the Walter Pyramid at California State University, Long Beach.  Our goal is to establish FAR/QUEENS as the ancient civilization field trip of choice and a nationally model for teachers of urban learners engaged in ancient civilization studies.  We invite you to consider a "showcase performance" to introduce local educators and community representatives to the benefits of this and other QHS programs. 

Program Description: 
QUEENS OF THE NILE, NOW, tells the story of the great Queens of Africa and their royal families. The author focuses on the leadership and respected role of women in ancient African matrimonial societies to reveal African female agency in ancient world history.  This historical pageant features eight key Queens.  Each Queen defines a distinct era, and marks the transition of Africans coming to America. The time period encompasses the reign of Queen Hatshepsut as Pharaoh of Kemet (Egypt) during the 18th Dynasty to Queen Yaa Asantewa’s stand against foreign domination on the Gold Coast (Ghana) during the 17th Century, covering 4,000 years and over 3,000 miles of the continent's history. 

ACADEMIC STANDARDS WILL COME ALIVE FOR:
Grades K-5th:  Language Arts
Grades 6-8th: History (Ancient Civilizations, Medieval Africa)
Grades 9-12th: Performing and Visual Arts Cultural Context)

Link Learning:
The cast of 100plus performers is the result of a multi-school collaboration between QHS staff and eight select middle / high school performing arts programs.

  • Students willgain valuable career experience as they model their skills within the environment of a professional theater venue.
  • Student will enhance their knowledge levels of how the arts can serve as a tool in both the education and performance arenas.
