Queens Historical Society is an arts education resource for social studies curriculum creation and production, focused on urban area learners and communities. The Society considers itself to be a cultural arts company, exploring the boundaries across various educational disciplines. We counter the absence of African women reflected in many social studies textbooks through its unique blend of ART, HISTORY and STORYTELLING that is informed by history before the African “Middle Passage”.
“Queens not only taught students about the diverse countries, cultures, costumology, postitive rituals of Africa, but also the importance of appreciating differences.
”
“I found that cultural responsive strategies were embedded.”
“It is one thing to read about the greatness from which we came, it is another thing to witness it reanacted right before our eyes.”
“There is no better lesson for me than to witness firsthand the pageants of African Immigrants and African Americans.”
